Life hacks have made everything easier. Once reserved for computer tricks and shortcuts, life hacks can now make pretty much everything easier. (Who knew that using soda pop tabs could make your closet more organized?) We think that some of the best life hacks can be used to simply and effectively keep common bugs under control in your home. Here’s a list for you to try:
Fruit Fly Trap
Fill a disposable paper or plastic cup about halfway with vinegar. Add a small amount of dish soap and stir. Cover with plastic wrap. Using a sharp knife, poke very small holes in the top of the plastic. The fruit flies are very attracted to the vinegar smell and will find their way into the cup, but they won’t be able to get out. Once you have a collection of dead fruit flies, toss the whole thing.
Peppermint Spider Spray
Mix 10 drops of peppermint essential oil with about ½ cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray wherever you have a spider problem in your house. The peppermint helps get rid of a variety of bugs, including spiders and cockroaches. Mice also don’t like the smell of peppermint.
Natural Plant Spray
Other effective essential oils for bug control are lemongrass, mint, and lavender. Each of these can be mixed with vinegar (or, if you’re more adventurous, you can use vodka), and sprayed on plants and surfaces in your home to keep bugs away.
Bug Barrier
Common spices you probably already have in your pantry can be used for bug control. Cinnamon, garlic, and cayenne pepper can each work as an anti-bug barrier. Simply sprinkle one of these around the foundation of your home or other places where you think bugs may be entering your domain.
