Silverfish can range in color from silver to a brown grey. They have two very long antennas on their head and their bodies measure about 12-19 mm long. Silverfish are also described as having a carrot shape body with fine scales. These pests have 15 pairs of legs and are very speedy runners. They are usually found in dark areas that are humid such as basements, bathrooms, and kitchens. Silverfish have destructive eating habits and especially enjoy eating carbohydrates such as paper, flour and meat. You might even find them in food bags that haven’t even been opened. They can live up to a year without food and usually live about two to eight years on a healthy diet. Many people have said that they don’t even notice silverfish in their home until they have an infestation that is uncontrollable.
If you are seeing hundreds of silverfish invading different areas of your home, it is likely that you have an infestation. It is definitely not a pleasant sight to see and it will be very hard to get rid of them on your own. They will mostly be found in bookshelves, dark areas, and in unopened food packages. Silverfish love dark humid areas so you also want to check those hard to reach places. When you have an infestation, you may also notice that different items around your home are being eaten. These creatures eat anything from dusty old books to fabric. When you have an infestation you want to make sure you take care of it right away because they are very quick to reproduce. We recommend that you contact a pest professional who can evaluate the problem, and remove the silverfish quickly and effectively.
